Spider Vein Removal Therapy in Huntersville, NC
Spider veins are fine red lines that appear just below the surface of the skin. In addition to cosmetic concerns, spider veins may also indicate an underlying medical condition. Spider vein removal therapy by Dr. Briggs E. Cook, Jr., a board-certified Huntersville surgeon who specializes in facial plastic surgery, or his well-trained staff treats the veins and also helps people in Charlotte and the surrounding areas determine if further medical evaluation is needed.
What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins may develop at any age, and men and women are both at risk for developing them. The highest occurrence, though, is amongst women between 30 to 60 years old. Spider veins are a vascular condition that signifies an inappropriate flow of blood back to the heart. In most cases, the underlying cause is an improper closure of small valves within the blood vessels. The valves are intended to keep the blood moving back to the heart and prevent “back flow.” When a valve does not close completely, the blood is allowed to flow back into the lower section of the vein where it pools and builds pressure. Over time, the walls of the vessel weaken, resulting in spider veins.
Why Should I Treat my Spider Veins?
If you have spider veins, you should have a thorough medical evaluation to determine the cause of the improper blood flow. Dr. Cook or his staff examines the areas around your spider veins to identify any other indications of vascular concerns, such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis.
Spider veins are mostly a cosmetic concern that is easily treated with sclerotherapy. After treatment, the damaged blood vessels are naturally absorbed by your body. If Dr. Cook or his staff suspects other vascular problems, he refers you to your primary care physician or a vascular specialist for evaluation and treatment.
Benefits of Spider Vein Removal Therapy
The benefits of spider vein removal therapy include:
- Sclerotherapy is minimally-invasive

- Requires minimal downtime

What Should I Expect From Spider Vein Removal Therapy?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a special solution into the damaged veins. Multiple injections are made in each vein at a predetermined length, such as one injection every inch. The number of injections is based upon the size and pattern of your spider veins. On average, between five and 40 injections are needed.
To make the injections, Dr. Cook or Denise Curtis, PA applies a topical numbing agent and pulls the skin tight. You may feel a short burning sensation as the solution is introduced into the vein. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and we generally recommend between two and six treatments to fully remove the spider veins.
The treatment area is wrapped in a compression bandage to promote healing. You may have some minor bruising for up to two weeks after the procedure. Exercise and other light activities are encouraged after sclerotherapy. Movement helps your body absorb the damaged vein and create a new path for blood flow.
What Should my Physician Explain to me About Spider Vein Removal Therapy?
Certain medical conditions may preclude you from undergoing sclerotherapy for your spider veins, such as:
- Heart conditions
- Problems with circulation
- Disease caused by blood-borne pathogens
Sclerotherapy effectively and safely removes your spider veins, but you may develop new spider veins over time.
